Shorts of the Summer

The dreaded shorts season is in full force. Every year, we beg for summer to come. We want the beach, no school, swim meets, and being outside. Yet the thought of putting on short’s dangles in the back of our minds. Well, we are here to help you wear shorts this summer in confidence, while looking stylish! There are so many types of shorts out there. It is all about finding the right one! From high rise to low rise, long to short, drawstring or pull on, we have you covered!

Depending on where you are going, a different style of short is necessary. If you are going to be doing lots of walking in warm weather on a vacation or shopping, opt for paper bag shorts or linen shorts. Jean shorts can get uncomfortable and sticky in warm weather for long periods of time. If you need something to throw on to pick the kids up from camp, try the linen shorts with a graphic tee and sneakers! If you ever need any help, send your selfies in, and we will respond in 15 minutes!

Lets break it down by types:

Jean Shorts

“Daisy Duke bikini on top!” No, in all seriousness, jean shorts or “jorts” do not need to be short. Right now, if you go online to a retailer who sells jean shorts, they come in long Bermuda length, a “mom” length with a 5in inseam, and the shorter 3in inseam. The one excellent thing about jeans shorts is that they are extremely easy to hem because they frequently have a raw hem. If you can’t t find a 4in inseam, grab a 5in pair and your kitchen scissors and get to chopping! Remember to measure the cut so both sides are even, start small as you can always cut off more. And, remember that they will fray, so give yourself a little bit of extra length.

Being made of denim, jean shorts can be styled in an almost identical way as jeans. They are incredibly versatile and are practically a neutral. A bonus is that if you want a pop of color, they also come in an array of colors for an affordable price. In the summer, wearing jean shorts with a white button-down, gold jewelry, and sandals is such a chic look. If you are ever struggling to elevate a jean shorts look, try French tucking your shirt in and adding gold jewelry!

Paper Bag Shorts

For a very long time, I have had my hesitation about paper bag shorts. However, this season I am in love with them! They do wonders for cinching your waist in and flatting you in the best ways! In recent years more and more variations of this style of shorts have appeared. You can now find them in any print imaginable! I have seen them in floral, plaid, to beaded, to just a solid bright color!  Furthermore, you can now find them without the bow belt that they were notorious for! Paper bag shorts without the bow can create an elevated look that brings your style game up effortlessly.

Since paper bag shorts are loose at the top, opt for a fitted top. Bodysuits and tailored blouses are great options! This style tip is follows the basic rule that if you wear something loose like pants, wear a tight top. The opposite also applies! Choosing more fitted pieces will help give your body figure and make sure that you are wearing your clothes and your clothes are not wearing you! If you need to bring your look to another level, try adding a blazer. A consistent fun combination is having your blazer and shorts being the same color. Then, wear a print for a top, and you have a stunning outfit!

Linen Shorts

Let me tell you, linen shorts are my lifesaver! They feel like pajama shorts, yet when you wear them, you look put together. Linen shorts cover a broad range of styles. They come in high-waisted, low waited, mid-rise, a tie, an elastic top, a button top, and many more variations. These style variations allow everyone to wear them, it is just about finding what pair looks best on you! Once you start looking, you will also discover that they come in many different colors. I recommend buying neutral colors and staying away from the patterns to keep a classy, elevated look!

I have a pair of linen shorts with an elastic top. At least once a week, you will catch me wearing them with a graphic tee and sneakers or sandals, depending on the day. To make the outfit look more stylish, I always accessorize with bangle bracelets and layered necklaces. For a more elevated look, I recommend wearing linen shorts with either a drawstring or a button. Then, pair them with a blouse or button-down, tucking it in completely or in a French tuck. If you are looking for a more on-the-go look, try the elastic top with a graphic tee or cropped tee. Linen shorts can be worn with sandals or sneakers, so don’t be afraid to try new ways to wear them!

Tailored Shorts

The tailored shorts are your dressy shorts. They can be pleated, pintuck, or just plain! I absolutely love when they are midrise to high waited as they extenuate your waist and give you more of a figure. I also love how these shorts can easily take an outfit from not quite perfect to a stunning fit! They just add that extra element of texture or pattern that pulls an outfit together!

These shorts are overall very versatile and can be worn with a blazer, blouse, bodysuit, or really anything! My favorite way to wear my tailored shorts this summer is with a puff sleeve. Adding this trendy element to a classic look makes you look modern and stylish. I recommend investing in a quality pair of tailored shorts that will last you many seasons and then switching up the accessories you wear with them to apply the season’s style to them. If you want to ease into the trends, wear a classic outfit and then some trendy sandals with a kitten heel or studs on them!
