Holiday Outfit Inspiration 2022: 9 Ways to Update your Style

Elevate your holiday style with ease

Need a little holiday outfit inspiration this holiday season? We’ve got you covered! From glow-up glam to relaxed smart style and everything in between, we’ve got style inspiration for every holiday event.

1. Sparkle and Shine holiday style

Sparkles are synonymous with the holidays! Nothing says festive like a little glitter. A sequin skirt or jacket can put a pop in your mood—and everybody else’s! We love this classic knee-length Donna Karan black sequin pencil skirt for the holidays. Sequins guarantee this piece will make a statement, and the classic cut and color mean the possibilities are endless. Pair it up with a solid turtleneck and you’ll put a spark in any meeting with a client, or add a silky blouse to put a shimmer in your date night. With choices of length from mini to maxi, your sequin skirt adds just the right amount of cheer to your holiday look.

If there’s any time of year you can get away with extra sparkle and luxe details, it’s the holidays! No matter what your style, incorporating a festive statement piece into your outfits gives you the opportunity to have fun getting dressed. Over time, adding unique accessories, textured fabrics and finishes, and playing with patterns helps you create a signature style all your own. Helping you discover a style that reflects you and your life is what we do best at lookingGLASS!

Grab the glitter for your holiday outfit inspiration! From babies to grown up fashionistas, we go for the glitter. Some studies have shown that glossy, glittery things may be innately attractive to humans—because they trigger our brains to think of water (think sunlight sparkling on a pool)! We must be extra thirsty here at lookingGLASS HQ because we can’t get enough!

If you’re ready to go bold, another chic option is this silver sequin boyfriend jacket from Express for the classic look.

In similar fashion, another great option if you’re feeling a little feistier and want to add a little spunk to your daily routine or New Year’s Eve, try this over- the-top fun gold sequin varsity jacket from Fleurty Girl or this gold sequin camisole top is understated enough to say yes to any occasion! These picks will have you rockin’ every look until the clock strikes midnight!

2. 'Tis the Season for TWEED

Who doesn’t love the classic look of tweed? If you’re feeling the English countryside vibe this holiday season, go with a pair of good quality tweed trousers or a smart tweed jacket.

Undoubtedly, you can’t talk about tweed without feeling like a smarty pants, visions of scholarly professors dancing in your head.

Surprisingly, the original name of this fabric was “tweel”! According to one story, a London merchant misinterpreted a handwritten letter inquiring about some “tweels.” He thought it must be a trade name taken from the River Tweed that flows through the Scottish Borders textile area where tweel originated. So, the merchant puts out some ads featuring “Tweed.”

and there you have it. It's been "tweed" ever since.

Anyone who has watched Downton Abbey knows how the British love their tweed! In the 1920’s Coco Chanel took note. She dated Hugh Grosvenor, the second Duke of Westminster, spending several summers at his Rosehall Estate and entertaining the likes of Winston Churchill. And the rest is history! Tweed has been a signature fabric of the Chanel fashion house for over a century and has become synonymous with the Chanel brand.

Coco would agree this versatile, comfortable and very durable fabric is a great way to elevate your holiday outfits for the season. You can’t go wrong with a tweed blazer!

3. The sweater dress to impress

Sweater dresses for this holiday season are especially versatile and run the gamut from dressy and body skimming to big and slouchy for all-day comfort. For this statement piece, choose a style that plays to your strengths. They are perfect for any occasion, from casual to work and after hours.

4. KNEE HIGH BOOTS

To say boots are a statement piece is something of an understatement. Seriously. When a pair of boots walk by you in the grocery store, you notice. Think of a good-quality pair of boots as an investment piece. Designers are focusing less on ankle boots this season. Instead, mid-calf and knee-high boots with a block or stiletto heel are on the rise. A pair of mid-calf slouch boots in cream or ivory look especially great under your maxi dress or skirts. The classic knee-high will always be in style. Pair them with a leather skirt or a short sequin skirt for a more festive look and you’re ready to go.

5. FUZZY JACKETS

Do they ever go out of style? Not in 2022! Snuggle into a faux fur in a slim cut over your jeans and turtleneck with knee-high boots to run errands— we love this red one from Eddie Bauer to update your holiday outfit style. Or this ultra-chic soft beige vintage style one from Zara for a more glamorous look. These luscious coats never fail to call up a feeling of the golden age of Hollywood glamour. Watch out for those paparazzi!

6. Rockin' the Right Red Lips

Classic red lips are unquestionably one of fashion’s best secret weapons! One of my favorite fashion tips, don’t be afraid of red lips! Hey, we get it! The right shade of red can be tricky. Before you shy away, try a few of these tried and true tips. If a true red feels a little too bold, there are other options that will bring out your festive best.

Here’s the rule of thumb: whenever you want a red lip that’s guaranteed to look understatedly chic, go with a red that has the same undertones as your skin. It really is as simple as knowing your undertones. Undertones are either cool or warm. Just look at the veins on the underside of your wrist. Do they look purplish or more greenish? If purplish, think cool undertones. Your go to will be blue-reds. If greenish, think warm undertones, and orangey or brick reds are for you. Next time you’re at Sephora, take the opportunity to sample some reds. Or, try one on virtually at maybelline.com.

And, don’t forget to shake it up a little, it’s the holidays!

Try on some shades that are opposite your skin tones. Who knows, it could be great on those days you feel like going a little edgy. Because discovering a love for getting dressed is all about having fun, and nothing says confidence like pulling off the right shade of scarlet kissers.

7. Party with finishes and prints

If the idea of anything gold and shimmery lights you up, then the little silk dress is for you! It’s a year-round asset and can go practically anywhere during the holidays, especially if you live in an area where temperatures can be surprisingly warm in the winter months.

For 2022, designers are inviting you to bring out the animal in you and walk on the wild side. If you’ve ever felt like coloring outside the box, this is the opportunity. The 2022 runways were where the wild things are, with leopard print the queen of the jungle. If you feel a little intimidated with confronting the denizens of the wild up close and personal, try incorporating some animal prints in an accessory. Heels, bags and scarves are a great place to add an understated pop of the wild side to your holiday outfit. Leopard-spotted heels are fun and festive for the holidays. Don’t be surprised if you find a little slink in your step!

Is plaid more your speed?

We love red plaid pieces, they can paired so many ways to cover casual to formal. All great bets for the holidays. (P.S. The jacket and pants of the plaid suit from J. Crew would certainly make great foundation pieces for a dazzling holiday capsule wardrobe!)

8. Update your picture perfect pearls

Since jewelry is a no-brainer when it comes to making a bold statement that shows off the festive you, grab. What accessory wins the prize for timeless and trend-driven in 2022’s top holiday jewelry trends? Get ready to dust off those pearls, ladies. Pair that classic strand with a gold chain or gold link necklace of a slightly different length to give it a fresh boost. Look for pearls in unexpected places like belts, barrettes and headbands. We love pearl belts to elevate the look of a classic black dress or sweater dress.

It’s quick and easy to slip beautiful barrettes into your hair, whether you’re dashing to pick up kids or stepping out with your honey to a holiday party.

Earrings can say it all! These gorgeous jewel-toned drops or classic chandelier styles are attention-grabbing, but with an understated elegance.

While we love a modern statement piece, don’t forget those heirloom pieces from that certain someone in your life. What a great time of year to pull them out and let them lend a special touch to the holiday celebration.

9. Clutch style

An indispensable essential, the clutch styles this season run from fun to super glamorous.

For daytime chic, we love this crossbody Kate Spade.

And for a more casual look, nothing says cozy like sherpa. You can easily incorporate this great seasonal fabric by adding it in as an accessory. We love sherpa clutches, in a muted, classic look for every day, or in bright colors if you feel like a little zing. Bonus, sherpa has all the warmth and coziness of fur while being completely animal friendly.

10. Posh Pajamas

Okay, this might be the most fun trend of the 2022 season. But, seriously, pajamas as streetwear? Yesssss. How fun is that? If nothing else, living through a global pandemic for…let’s just say long enough to change some lifestyle habits…awakened us to some fashion alternatives, like going to meetings in your pajamas. Okay, it was Zoom and they couldn’t get the full picture. But, still… Since being cozy is the mood of the season, treat yourself to a plush PJ set.

11. CREATE A MINI-CAPSULE WARDROBE

A key secret to putting you at the top of your fashion game is mastering the capsule wardrobe. In a nutshell, a capsule wardrobe is a few select pieces that are interchangeable and can cover any occasion. It’s the art of how to invest in a few quality pieces that have multiple pairing possibilities. At lookingGLASS, we think of it as Optimize. Maximize. Stylize.

lookingGLASS is about empowering you. For fun, we’ve pulled together a capsule wardrobe outfit from the holiday outfits inspiration pieces featured in this post and added a few snazzy extras. There are a zillion more possibilities once you get the hang of it. Have fun and try it out. Grab the Holiday Mini-Capsule Wardrobe here!
