Decide what you want the dress to say. Velvet feels rich and romantic. Satin is sleek and polished. Sequins are full glam and party ready. Knit is cozy but elevated. Pick the mood first and the rest of the styling gets easier.
2. Get the neckline right
Think about where you want the focus. A V neck elongates the neck and flatters the bust. A square or sweetheart neckline feels soft and feminine. A high neck reads modern and chic. Sit test for comfort and make sure you can move and breathe easily.
3. Nail the length
For heels, aim for a midi that hits mid calf or just above the ankle for a long clean line. Minis should hit a few inches above the knee so you can sit and dance without tugging. Maxis should skim the top of your shoe, not drag. Move around and check mirrors from all angles.
Holiday dresses should feel special but wearable. Look for lined sequins so they do not scratch, velvet with a bit of structure, and knits that keep their shape. Hold the dress up to the light. If it feels too thin or clingy, you may be fussing with it all night.
