Where to Go: Exploring Morocco’s Best Spots
Marrakech: The Cultural Heart of Morocco
Marrakech is where the energy of Morocco truly comes to life! Known for its bustling markets, ancient architecture, and lively medina, this city is a must-see for every traveler. The vibrant colors, 15 different smells at the same time, all of the noises and sounds, and rich history all come together to make Marrakech an unforgettable destination.
Highlights:
- Jemaa el-Fnaa Square: Catch the sunset here, where local performers and street vendors fill the square with a lively atmosphere. There is local street food, musician and all types of performances happening. Your eyes will have a hard time deciding what to focus on.
- Marrakech Souks: Stroll through the intricate souks, discovering handmade crafts, textiles, and exotic spices. I loved this so much because I love a treasure hunt. Prices are negotiable so practice up on your best bargaining skills!
- Private Medina Tour: Highly recommend booking a private medina tour on your first day to get your bearings—this way, you can feel more comfortable navigating the city’s maze-like alleys on your own. We did this an it was an absolute life saver!
- Motorcycle Sidecar Tour: We did a motorcycle sidecar tour, and it was beyond fun! Such a unique way to explore the area. I recommend doing it in the middle of the day. It's a good time to take a break from walking and in the warmer temperatures it will feel nice to have the wind blowing through your hair.
Atlas Mountains: Natural Beauty and Local Culture
If you're looking for a true taste of Morocco’s stunning natural landscapes and culture a trip to the Atlas Mountains is essential. This mountain range is not just beautiful; it’s home to Berber villages, where you can truly experience the rural culture that’s vastly different from city life in Marrakech.
Highlights:
- Cultural Insight: Explore Berber villages and get a glimpse into the daily lives of Moroccans who live in the countryside. breathtaking valleys. Everyone here is so friendly. You will see donkeys and people hard at work. A must-do for that authentic Moroccan experience!
- Ourika Valley: This valley is known for its picturesque waterfalls and traditional markets—a great spot for some stunning photos of Morocco.
Agafay Desert: A Peaceful Desert Escape
For those who want the desert experience without the long trek to the Sahara, the Agafay Desert is your perfect spot. Located just outside of Marrakech, this rocky, quiet desert offers stunning views and is ideal for camel rides or a night under the stars. This was my favorite part of the trip!
Highlights:
- Camel Rides at Sunset: There’s nothing quite like riding a camel with the sun setting over the desert—an absolute must!
- Luxury Desert Camps: Stay overnight at a beautiful desert camp where you can enjoy luxury, serenity, and the breathtaking open sky. If we would have had one more day on our trip we would have done this. It was so magical and unlike anything I'd ever done before.
What to Pack for Morocco: Stylish and Practical Tips
When it comes to packing, a good suitcase is absolutely essential. I can’t recommend my Briggs & Riley 21-inch 2-wheel suitcase enough! It offers more interior room than most 4-wheel spinners, and I love the hanging capabilities for keeping things neat.
For clothing, a capsule wardrobe is the way to go—stick to neutral tones like white, tan, and black, and mix in a pop of color (I went for red) to keep things interesting. Everything I packed could be mixed and matched, making it super easy to put together outfits.
I was so worried about what to pack for Morocco, but honestly, you’ll see everything there! From people completely covered head to toe, with only the whites of their eyes showing, to tourists walking around in tank tops and cut-off shorts. You can truly wear whatever you feel comfortable in. I kept a scarf in my bag at all times, just in case we visited a place where I felt like I should cover up a bit more. There was one night when we were getting a bit of unwanted attention—nothing dangerous, just some cat-calling—so I was glad to have my scarf to wrap up in.
Packing Tips:
- Linen: It’s breathable, lightweight, and perfect for the hot weather in Morocco. Don’t forget to pack a travel-sized wrinkle release spray—trust me, it’ll come in handy!
- Comfortable Shoes: With all the walking you’ll do, make sure to pack comfy sandals or sneakers that complement your capsule wardrobe.
- Modesty: While you’ll see a variety of outfits, it’s always a good idea to pack a scarf for more conservative areas, or when visiting religious sites. It’s also great for unpredictable weather!
- Capsule Wardrobe: I recommend picking neutral colors for the base and then adding one accent color for a pop. For my trip, I packed tan, white, and black as my base, with red as my accent color. I brought a red top, a red scarf, and a dress with some red in it. This made it easy to mix and match pieces effortlessly!
When to Visit Morocco: The Perfect Time to Go
The timing of your trip can make all the difference. We visited Morocco in mid-September, and the weather was perfect—about 85°F, which was much more bearable than the 120°F it had been the week before!
Best Time to Visit:
- Spring (March-May) and Fall (September-November) offer the most comfortable temperatures, making it easier to explore both the cities and the desert without melting!
- Summer in Morocco can get extremely hot, particularly in Marrakech, so plan ahead if you're visiting in July or August.
Living Like a Local: Tips for an Authentic Experience
To truly immerse yourself in Morocco’s rich culture, it’s essential to live like a local. One of the best ways to start your trip is with a guided medina tour on your first day to get a feel for the city and its layout. Another great tip: Take a food tour! You’ll find the best street food spots without having to worry about picking the wrong stand.
Pro Tip: We kept things simple by leaving jewelry at home and dressing down a bit. This helped us avoid unwanted attention and feel comfortable while exploring.
Must-Visit Restaurants in Morocco
While the food in the street markets is incredible, you’ll definitely want to try some sit-down spots too. My absolute favorite was Dar Dar, which had a delicious, authentic Moroccan menu. It also included live music and a stunning view of the city. I also loved the Italian at La Trattoria, the vibe inside with all the plants and dip pool was so exotic. It was also nice and cool and served great drinks!
